Garrett finally returns from his tour du ski and visits the Columbia River Gorge to do some house hunting. In Washington State he looks at two houses and a condo. He enjoys fried oysters and the distant views of volcanoes overlooking the Straights of Juan de Fuca, but thinking ahead to retirement, decides to wait on the house, and heads back to Burbank after two weeks

6::02 A.M. It’s a strange site for the yachtsmen of Falmouth Harbor this morning. A very pallid Bicky Raitz is found at the end of a rope hanging from the pier entry gate. His hands are tied, but his legs are not. His neck is badly chafed, so he must have pranced for a while.

Later Garrett finds out from Zach Edwards that Bicky’s wife Darlene was found hanging in their cellar. The consensus roundabout was that Raitz drove her to it with his degenerate lifestyle and visits to Provincetown bars.

Zach says that Darlene’s brothers were in the area after her death and found out the events leading up to it. In Zack’s opinion, the brothers were the conveyers of justice. Garrett feels sorry for Bicky, but is comforted by a peaceful feeling that nature has taken its true course.

Garrett meets Katy from Oakland. She’s only twenty and maybe the prettiest girl he’s ever seen. She is also smart, stylish, and kind hearted. He falls in love quickly. She turns out to be married, but in the process of getting a divorce. He decides that he had best love her only as a father loves a daughter, because he can’t picture her being happy with him ten or twenty years from now. It’s the hardest thing he has ever had to do, but he lets her go. Within six months he hears that she ran off to Canada with one of those young Chip n’ Dale male strippers, a better match.

Garrett is driving very fast in the mountains when he sees Katy hitchhiking on a back road. He drives past without braking, looks in the rear view mirror, and sees her throw down her pack, trace a sigil in the air, and fire it at him. He swerves the Porsche quickly as if to dodge it. She smiles, then folds her arms and glares after him with a smoldering pout. Oh, how he loves this dear little Katy person, but knows that he must keep on driving. He thinks of her from here on as the “the archetypal American blonde Katy-daughter”.

In preparation for World War III, Garrett attends the official founding of the Legion of Ragnarok at Mount Hood Oregon.
