College

November 2, 2024

Senator Moses Lowenstein is chairing a small meeting in his office,

“We will not be intimidated by these would-be Minute Men. This I not their America any more. We are the law. I am appending a draft to the original bill to initiate the entire relocation operation over again. Over the winter break, we will commandeer their entire college campus for the Africans. Thirty thousand this time, with a larger team to speed up the processing and teaching.”

The rabble applaud.

At Walter Durrant’s kitchen table, the six heroes are having a meeting. Daryl has made many phone calls over the past few days,

“At first I considered a raid with poison gas canisters fired with bazookas, but there would be too much shooting, we would be outgunned ten to one, but listen carefully. I have procured eight very small nuclear devises which can be detonated from a distance simultaneously, will leave the campus completely intact, but kill everybody with radiation. The half-life is only sixteen hours. We can plant them all well beforehand and set them off on a windless day so we don’t hurt anybody off campus. The bad news is that when these traitors decide on a third shipment, they may be smart enough to conceal the venue until they have released their savages.”

Karl interjects,

“If this goes on long enough we might be able to decimate the entire population of Africa. Too bad we can’t carry the fight to them. It would save the government a lot on transportation,”

The others smile.

“Who knows? Maybe by this time next year… After all, our people in Europe vanquished the bubonic plague.” replies Daryl.

The heroes begin to place the devises on campus individually. This is usually done on the way to the college library to make their presence seem natural. Dense shrubbery is the usual hiding place.

Hugh burrows places the last device at one far end of the campus devoid of landscaping. Pretending to be a maintenance worker, he is putting it behind a heating grate in a dining area, , when a sharp tonged young female instructor asks what he is doing. He replies,

“Hello. Just changing an air filter.”

The first Africans arrive. Within six days they are all in residence.

The TV news says that tomorrow the immigrants will be served a belated Thanksgiving dinner to celebrate their arrival.

The air is very still and is forecast to remain this way for the next twenty-four hours. In Walter Durrant’s darkened living room, with the television on, and the sound turned down, Daryl Johnson holds a cell phone in his hand. The six heroes are seated facing the large picture window looking towards the college campus. Daryl takes a deep breath, and sings aloud in a traditional voice,

“The wicked oppressing,

Cease them for distressing.

Sing praises to His name.

He forgets not his own.

He presses the saved call number. Three seconds later, the sky lights up with a warm orange glow, and remains this way for about four seconds, then fades. No sound.
